  Shrewdness exemplified.
The occasion is a talk show being hosted by Rajdeep Sardesai and the dignitaries being Mr. Narayan Murthy and Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. One of the audience members brings up the topic of Mr. Murthy becoming the President of the country. And as usual Mr. Murthy very humbly explains that he is better off doing things that he presently does rather than making himself available to cut ribbons across the country and host state dinners for visiting dignitaries and foreign delegates.

Sardesai takes a public poll asking the audience if they would support Mr. Murthy’s candidature. And the result is a overwhelming yes. Sardesai then turns to Pranabda and asks him if he would support Murthy’s candidature. Now Pranabda is in a fix. He could not have said no he would be going against public opinion and he could not have said yes because the Congress party had supported the current President Pratibha Patil during the election. And if shrewdness is a necessary trait for a politician, Pranabda exemplified it by his answer. Any Indian who is above 35 years of age and is a sane person can make put up his candidature and we shall decide when Mr. Murthy makes himself available was his answer. Neither a yes nor a no. The ball is now in your court Mr. Murthy.
